Throughout my life I have struggled with my weight, depression, anxiety, and attention defecit disorder. I have narcolepsy, which causes me to always be tired. If I didn’t exercise, I would be so much more tired. It’s amazing to read all the many ways exercise affects the body in a positive way. Regular exercise helps with alertness in people of all ages. Regular exercise by a pregnant mother can even help with the brain development of the newborn. John Hatey is a selfless, generous, heroic man who found a problem and needed to solve it. Why are kids in Physical Education not actually exercising and then falling asleep in classes? Book Choice The book I chose to read and review is â€Å"Spark the revolutionary new science of exercise and the†¦show more content†¦It is selfless, heroic, and generous of him to do the research in order to help students. In the end, more people were educated on his theories of the benefits of exercise and this information helped them as well. John Ratey believed a P.E. class was pointless for children. Many were shy and didn’t partake in the activities. He noticed the alertness and higher grades of the students that did participate and wanted to help the students who weren’t very alert and had poor grades. His selflessness is very admirable. He didn’t perform case studies at several different schools for himself, but to help others. I knew exercise was beneficial in lowering depression, boosting your immune system, and a really great de-stressor. I didn’t know the impact it has on newborns whose mothers exercised regularly throughout pregnancy. There’s a lot of arguments about the safety of exercising while pregnant. James Clapp, an obstetrician and professor of reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University, did a case study with 65 newborns who were each 5 days old; 34 newborns whose mother exercised regularly throughout pregnancy and 31 newborns whose mother did not. The newborns of the active mother scored better in 2 out of 6 tests. These newborns were able to calm themselves better after a loud noise or visual disturbance, and they were more responsive to stimuli. Elie Wiesel, a Noble Peace Prize winner and Boston University Professor, presented a speech as part of the Millennium Lecture Series at the White House on April 12, 1999. President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton hosted the formal lecture series. Numerous dignitaries from a wide array of public, private and foreign office attended the event. Although Elie Wiesel designed his speech to persuade, it actually fell somewhat outside the deliberative genre category, as being more non-typical within this genre category. The speech is unique in a way that cascades it into a genre classification considered as a hybrid deliberative genre. Music can stir up old memories of different times, places, and people. In the U. S. A major part of life Is music, as stated by Natalie Clue Adams and Pamela J. Beetles, American Institution that can tell us something about ourselves, like jazz, baseball, and cheerleaders, are also not static but being created anew with each generation. (Remix 240. ) One can see how large of a role music plays in peoples lives, and thats why Im proposing a loudly based on celebrating and enjoying music all over the world. One thing that just about every culture has in common is music. Music is embraced In cultures everywhere, and thats why a day devoted to music would be the perfect holiday. All over the world people would take the day off to celebrate, listen to, play, and all around enjoy all types of music. Tradition is important, it brings families and friends closer together and allows for them to bond and strengthen their relationships. The list of things to do on Music Day is endless. You can begin a family tradition, go along with other’s traditions, or just go with the flow every year and still have a great time. If a particular tradition catches on to enough people it may eventually become custom. Some things, such as exchanging gifts, would most likely become customary. The exchanging of gifts, mostly likely they would be gift that had something to do with music. Whether it be a musical instrument it self of just band shirts, posters, or cd’s. All types music related gifts could be given. This is just one more thing to look forward to on Music Day. This is another holiday that is all about giving, and not only in the way you may think. Someone can buy their girlfriend a CD in hopes that she will return the favor, but the giving I’m talking about requires no reciprocation. A majority of the proceeds from Music Day merchandise sales and other activities that profit from the holiday would go straight to a Charity of the companies choices. This not only makes the holiday fun for everyone, but it has a good moral factor to it. â€Å"Giving is the best gift,† I’m sure we have all heard this saying before, and there’s a reason for that. It is. The benefits of a massive world wide donation to hundreds of different charities would make such a major impact that participators of Music Day wouldn’t be able to help but feel good. At some point in time it may even be a part of Music Day to see how much we as a people can actually donate to charity. Trying to break previous records would be a fun way to raise for money for those who need it. This holiday would be a top holiday on anyone’s list. Who can argue with giving to charity? The last, but not least part of music day is the free concert series. Once a year on a summer day musicians from every country will tune their instruments and power up their amplifiers in preparation of Music Day. Everyone from popular artists to local bands would hit the stage and play just for the love of music. Free concerts available in just about every town for everyone to enjoy. This would give people a chance to go hear their favorite music artists. This opens up the idea of travel on Music Day. People and their families may want to go see a performer who is far away, and what better way to go on a small family vacation. I can just hear it now, â€Å"Hey Kids pack your bags were going to New York City for Music day. † The key to this aspect of the holiday is for all the concerts to be free of charge, so that way everyone who wants to has the option to go listen to professional musicians. Whether it is the symphony, a bluegrass show, a solo pianists, the latest rap artist, or even a heavy metal band performances would be taking place all day so there is always something for everyone. Parents can go down to the jazz club, or check out an oldies concert while the kids see the local punk bands performing just down the block. This event would of course be massive and require a lot of planning and thought, but a holiday celebrating the joy music brings to our lives is well worth that. Plus Music Day would be a holiday everyone would look forward to. Going to concerts is fun and exciting. People pay big bucks to see professionals do their thing on stage and walk away feeling like they got the best out of their money. The free concerts would be gain public popularity in no time at all, and pretty soon people would be counting down the days until Music Day. In conclusion, Music Day would be the ideal new holiday. A summer holiday that everyone could enjoy, and not only would it be for fun and partying, it would be for a good cause. New family traditions would arise and bring people closer together one more day out of the year. It would give people a chance to perhaps see someone perform when otherwise they would have never been able to do so. Picnics, family time, concerts, travel, tradition, and the list goes on and on. Beowulf13 Essay The Anglo-Saxon Culture as Illustrated in BeowulfBeowulf is an epic poem, which takes place in ancient Denmark and Geatland and describes the adventures of Beowulf, a Geat hero. Through their heroes, epic poems usually describe the traditions and beliefs of a certain culture. An Anglo-Saxon author wrote Beowulf about the Danes and Geats. The Anglo-Saxons had similar beliefs to that of the Dane and Geats, so the poem gives us some idea of what the Anglo-Saxon culture was like. Throughout Beowulf, it is illustrated that women were thought to be virtually valueless; that Anglo-Saxons believed in paganism, and that there was great emphasis on valuables and weaponry. The Anglo-Saxon culture did not value women highly. Women were not recognized for the deeds they did. The Danish Beowulfs own mother was not even recognized for her part in his birth. His father Ecgtheow was given all the credit for Beowulfs birth: And he gave them more than his gloryconceived a son for the Danes, a new leade r. (Beowulf, 1057). Kings usually would give away their daughters hand in marriage to a total stranger for a peace treaty with another nation. The daughter had no say in what was done with her, like Healfdenes daughter who was given away to Onela the Swedish king. In all aspects of life, women were not considered very valuable and were treated as objects rather than people. Hrothgar remembers Beowulf upon his arrival: His father was called Ecgtheow: Hrethel of the Geats gave him his only daughter for his home. Now has his hardly offspring come here, sought a fast friend.(1067). The daughters were usually forced to marry someone they did not know rather than being able to marry someone they loved. A woman was considered property, the ownership depending upon whether she was married or not. When married, she is her husbands, when unmarried, she is her fathers property. A man could beat his wife if she disobeyed him, and adultery by men was rarely punished, whereas women were disgraced and sent away for the same offense. Spinning, weaving, and cooking were skills possessed by nearly all of the women in the Anglo-Saxon period. Their main purpose was considered to bear children, feed, clothe their families, and to be a hostess for visitors. Women were not considered equal to men, especially in the aspect of fighting. In the wake of Grendels mothers attack, the destruction is not considered as mighty due to the fact that the attacker was a woman: The attack was less terrible by just so much as is the strength of women,(1079). The Anglo-Saxons were pagans, people who are not Christians. This is a trait that was shown throughout the poem. The warriors had the attitude that fate would decide their destiny. Beowulf leaves it up to fate as he prepares for the fight with Grendel: Fate always goes as it must! (1068). The people believed that Wyrd, the god of Fate, decided their future. The warriors showed a very fatalistic attitude. Beowulf proves this point when he tells Hrothgar not to mourn his friend Eshers death:Sorrow not, wise warrior. It is better for a man to avenge his friend than much mournLet him who may get glory before death: that is best for the warrior after he has gone from life. (1081). Beowulf believes that what happens is meant to happen and life will go on. The Anglo-Saxons thought that fate decided the outcome of their battles. When Beowulf decides to fight the dragon, fate is not on his side: His mind was mournful, restless and ripe for death: very close was the fate which should come to the old man, seek his souls hoard, divide life from his body, not long for him was the life of the noble one wound in his flesh. (1094). Beowulf illustrates the views of these people, and how their fighting was affected by their pre-Christian beliefs. Weapons and treasures were very important to the Anglo-Saxon people. These valuables symbolized all the fighting a warrior had done in order to receive them. The more good deeds a warrior had done, the more weapons and treasures he possessed.
